Quando si incrina il rapporto tra civiltà e natura, quando l’interazione tra storia umana e vita del pianeta viene perturbata da ciò che Nietzsche chiamerebbe la volontà di potenza della libertà immatura, non solo il futuro diventa incerto. Diventa anche sempre più difficile immaginare nuove forme di abitabilità dell’unico pianeta in cui la vita può riprodursi, se non vogliamo indulgere nell’illusione puerile di poter abbandonare ciò che si è distrutto per raggiungere altri lidi. Prima di immaginare quale nuovo orientamento dare alle nostre vite, come se radicati stili di vita possano essere riorientati a piacimento dall’oggi al domani, occorre chiedersi quali risorse offrano le culture per una diversa e nuova abitabilità della dimora che ci ospita. Per esempio, interrogare i simboli e i miti attraverso cui nel passato la terra e la natura sono state raccontate: tutto un repertorio di sapienza che oggi deve essere tenuto presente, per provare ad assegnare un altro senso alla nostra relazione con le risorse e all’esperienza stessa dell’ospitalità, se è vero che siamo tutti ospiti di una pianeta che, come qualsiasi altra dimora, ha sue proprio regole di abitabilità. Il discorso scientifico odierno ci mette a disposizione tutto il sapere necessario per capire le ragioni dell’insostenibilità dei nostri regimi produttivi e delle nostre abitudini di consumo, ma per sentire la necessità del cambiamento occorre alimentare la nostra immaginazione, aderire a una diversa persuasione di sé. E per questo occorre fare riferimento, appunto, al ricco universo simbolico messoci a disposizione dalle diverse culture e tradizioni.

When the relationship between civilization and nature breaks down, when the interaction between human history and the life of the planet is disrupted by what Nietzsche would call the will to power of immature freedom, not only does the future become uncertain. It also becomes increasingly difficult to imagine new forms of habitability of the only planet where life can reproduce itself, if we do not want to indulge in the puerile illusion of being able to abandon what has been destroyed to reach other shores. Before imagining what new orientation to give to our lives, as if deep-rooted lifestyles can be reoriented at will from one day to the next, we must ask ourselves what resources cultures offer for a different and new habitability of the place that hosts us. For example, questioning the symbols and myths, through which the earth and nature have been told in the past: a whole repertoire of wisdom that must be kept in mind today, to try to assign another meaning to our relationship with resources and to the very experience of hospitality, if it is true that we are all guests of a planet that, like any other home, has its own rules of habitability. Today's scientific discourse provides us with all the knowledge necessary to understand the reasons for the unsustainability of our production regimes and our consumption habits, but to feel the need for change we have to nurture our imagination, to adhere to a different persuasion of ourselves. And for this we may refer to the rich symbolic universe made available to us by different cultures and traditions.

Lorsque la relation entre la civilisation et la nature se rompt, lorsque l'interaction entre l'histoire humaine et la vie de la planète est perturbée par ce que Nietzsche appellerait la volonté de puissance d'une liberté immature, non seulement l'avenir devient incertain. Il devient également de plus en plus difficile d'imaginer de nouvelles formes d'habitabilité pour la seule planète sur laquelle la vie peut se reproduire, si l'on ne veut pas se laisser aller à l'illusion puérile de pouvoir abandonner ce qui a été détruit pour d'autres rivages. Avant d'imaginer quelle nouvelle orientation donner à nos vies, comme si des modes de vie profondément ancrés pouvaient être réorientés à volonté du jour au lendemain, nous devons nous demander quelles ressources les cultures offrent pour une habitabilité différente et nouvelle de la demeure qui nous accueille. Il faut par exemple s'interroger sur les symboles et les mythes utilisés dans le passé pour décrire la terre et la nature : tout un répertoire de connaissances qu'il faut garder à l'esprit aujourd'hui, pour tenter d'attribuer un autre sens à notre relation avec les ressources et à l'expérience même de l'hospitalité, s'il est vrai que nous sommes tous des hôtes sur une planète qui, comme toute autre habitation, a ses propres règles d'habitabilité. Le discours scientifique actuel nous fournit toutes les connaissances nécessaires pour comprendre les raisons de la non-durabilité de nos régimes de production et de nos habitudes de consommation, mais pour ressentir la nécissité du changement, nous devons nourrir notre imagination, adhérer à une autre persuasion de nous-mêmes. Et pour cela, nous devons nous référer au riche univers symbolique mis à notre disposition par les différentes cultures et traditions.

Wenn die Beziehung zwischen Zivilisation und Natur ins Wanken gerät, wenn die Wechselwirkung zwischen der menschlichen Daseinsform und dem Leben auf dem Planeten durch das gestört wird, was Nietzsche den Machtwillen der unreifen Freiheit nennen würde, wird nicht nur die Zukunft ungewiss. Es wird auch immer schwieriger, sich neue Formen des Miteinander auf diesem Planeten vorzustellen, dem einzigen, den wir kennen, auf dem Leben fortbestehen kann, wollten wir uns nicht einer kindischen Illusion hingeben, wir könnten die von uns selbst zerstörte Lebensgrundlage durch eine andere ersetzen. Bevor wir danach streben, unserer Lebensweise zu transformieren - tief verwurzelte Lebensstile lassen sich ohnehin nicht über Nacht nach Belieben neu ausrichten - müssen wir uns fragen, welche vorhandenen Ressourcen die Kulturkreise für eine andere und neue Existenzgrundlage auf dieser Erde bieten. So sollten wir beispielsweise die Symbole und Mythen befragen, die in der Vergangenheit zur Beschreibung der Welt und der Natur verwendet wurden. Sie stellen ein großes Repertoire an Weisheit dar, mit dem wir uns heute beschäftigen sollten, und der Bedeutung der Gastfreundschaft ein anderes Gewicht zuweisen, um zu erkennen, dass wir alle nur Gäste auf diesem Planeten sind und wir uns den Regeln, die sein Gastrecht vorschreibt, unterwerfen müssen. Der heutige wissenschaftliche Diskurs liefert uns all das Wissen, das wir brauchen, um die Gründe für die mangelnde Nachhaltigkeit unserer Produktions- und Konsumgewohnheiten zu verstehen. Um aber der Notwendigkeit nach Veränderung nachzukommen, müssen wir unsere Vorstellungskraft erweitern und zu einer anderen Überzeugung von uns selbst gelangen. Dazu können wir auf das reiche Universum der Symbole zurückgreifen, das uns die verschiedenen Kulturen und Traditionen an die Hand geben.
In memoriam
Dal 2021, la Fondazione Eranos dedica i suoi Convegni annuali (Eranos Tagungen) a una figura straordinaria della storia della medicina contemporanea, il luminare Peter Anton Miescher (1923-2020), e a sua moglie Annatina (1924-2016), compagna di vita, interlocutrice privilegiata, pittrice sensibile. Desidera così esprimere la sua gratidune a due persone che in tempi e modalità diverse hanno mostrato un grande affetto nei confornti della dalla nostra istituzione. Pioniere nello studio delle malattie autoimmuni, Peter Anton Miescher è stato Professore di Medicina al Bellevue Medical Center dell'Università di New York; Professore e Direttore del Centro Trasfusionale e della Divisione di Ematologia clinica e sperimentale all’Università di Ginevra; Consulente di Immunoematologia clinica per l’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità; e Consulente per il Ministero della Sanità cinese. I suoi studi teorici e sperimentali, così come la sua pratica clinica, unite a uno spirito innovativo e intrepido, gli hanno consentito di fare importanti scoperte, il cui esito, in ultima analisi, è stato quello di rivoluzionare la cura delle malattie autoimmuni. Uomo di immensa cultura, collezionista e musicista, umanista curioso, negli ultimi anni della sua vita ha voluto condividere con la Fondazione Eranos l’organizzazione di due simposi extra-muros, svoltisi presso il museo del Castello di Tarasp (2018 e 2019), sulle grandi questioni esistenziali che interessano oggi le nostre società. L’amicizia di cui la Fondazione ha potuto beneficiare si è anche tradotta in una importante donazione, grazie alla quale sarà possibile offrire al nostro pubblico un incontro annuale di studio sui temi universali (l’arte, la spiritualità, il senso della vita) che più gli stavano a cuore. Una occasione per conservarne e condividerne la memoria e dimostrare la nostra gratitudine.
Since 2021, the Eranos Foundation has dedicated their annual Conferences (Eranos Tagungen) to an extraordinary figure in the history of contemporary medicine, the luminary Peter Anton Miescher (1923-2020), and to his wife Annatina (1924-2016), a life companion, privileged interlocutor, and sensitive painter. It thus wishes to express its gratidune to two people who at different times and in different ways showed great affection in confornti of our institution. A pioneer in the study of autoimmune diseases, Peter Anton Miescher was Professor of Medicine at Bellevue Medical Center of New York University; Professor and Director of the Transfusion Center and Division of Clinical and Experimental Hematology at the University of Geneva; Consultant of Clinical Immunohematology to the World Health Organization; and Consultant for the Chinese Ministry of Health. His theoretical and experimental studies, as well as his clinical practice, combined with an innovative and intrepid spirit, allowed him to make important discoveries whose outcome, ultimately, was to revolutionize the treatment of autoimmune diseases. A man of immense culture, collector and musician, curious humanist, in the last years of his life he wanted to share with the Eranos Foundation the organization of two extra-muros symposia, held at the museum of Tarasp Castle (2018 and 2019), on the great existential questions that affect our societies today. The friendship from which the Foundation was able to benefit also took the form of an important donation, thanks to which it will be possible to offer our audience an annual study meeting on the universal themes (art, spirituality, the meaning of life) that were most dear to him. An occasion to preserve and share his memory and to show our gratitude.
